Bilingual Education: who is it for?
It is for every child of pre-school age and up, regardless of his/her nationality, linguistic or cultural background. It is a model of education where every child growing in the ever changing world with on frontiers, should have the right to attend.
It is a model for the “internationalcommunity child”, who will benefit from being in closer contact with the host country children, establishing valuable relationships, picking up the language and culture through social interactions with peers as well as through the specially structured bilingual programme. By attending a Bilingual School the children of the international community not only benefit from a continuous high quality international education but also have more opportunities to integrate better with the host society, thus avoiding isolation. If one of the objectives when moving into a new country is that of learning more about that country and gaining new life experinces, learnign the language and culture of that country will help you to better achieve this. A Bilingual School will ensure that this opportunity is not missed!
It is a model for the “Italian monolingual child”, who will benefit not only from the maintenance and development of his/her mother tongue, but also from the opportunity to become proficient in a second language, developing broad cross cultural understanding in a language riche environment and through a rigorous academic programme.
Finally, it is a model for the “bilingual family child”, who will not only be able to develop and extend his/her language skills through the bilingual programme of studies, but will also grow in self confidence and self esteem with regards to his/her own dual identity and culture.
For optimal results it is advisable that children stay in a Bilignaul programme for a minimum of 4 to 7 years, (V. Collier & W. Thomas 2002 – http://crede.berkeley.edu/). However in out school we will accept children who can benefit form the programme at aNy age, thanks to our implementation of the “Sheltered Instruction Programme” (SIOP – http://www.siopinstitute.com/).
